HOUSTON – February 3, 2010 … Salata, the Houston-based create-your-own salad restaurant, wants to play fetch. In fact, if you fetch, they’ll toss - and the results will be some much happier homeless pets in the care of Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP).
Beginning Feb. 8 and for the next 90 days, the Salata Energy Corridor location at 14515 Katy Freeway (I-10 just east of Highway 6) has partnered with CAP to help adopt homeless animals into good homes and to bring in needed supplies for animals the organization cares for. For anyone who fetches (purchases) and then donates needed supplies to CAP at one of their drop-off locations or adopts a pet, CAP will provide a buy-one, get-one-free certificate for a custom-made Salata tossed salad or wrap.
You know the routine. Do good. Get a treat.
Because of the West Houston Salata’s proximity to CAP facilities (as well as to a 3.5-acre park-like parcel of land at I-10 and Barker Clodine Road which is the future site of CAP’s larger and permanent home), the partnership seems a natural, says Salata founder, Berge Simonian. And with Salata’s theme of “Eat good. Look Good. Feel good,” getting a salad after helping out our four-legged friends seems a good fit as well.
The CAP donation is simple. The organization is looking for different kinds of pet food, supplies, stamps and bleach, among other items. Go to http://www.cap4pets.org/support-us/wish-list for a complete list. Donations can be made at the Citizens for Animal Protection Shelter, 11925 Katy Freeway or at the Petsmart Luv-A-Pet Adoption Centers staffed by CAP in Petsmart Stores located at 16758 Southwest Freeway in Sugar Land; 2610 Eldridge Parkway and at 10500 Katy Freeway. A CAP representative will reward donors with the Salata coupon. (Salata cannot accept items for donation at the restaurant).
Salata, which takes its name from the Latin origin of the word “salad,” is a salad bar with a major twist. As diners browse along a bar loaded with a phenomenal array of lettuces, greens, fruits, cheeses, seeds, nuts, meats and other condiments, they direct servers on how they want to build their personalized salads. Salata also offers wraps, similarly created in free-style, plus soups and dessert brownies. In addition, Salata has created its own line of salad dressings, freshly made and available both to enjoy with the meal, or to take home in 12 oz. bottles.
The concept was created by Houstonian Berge Simonian and business partner Tony Kyoumjian. The first Salata opened in Houston’s Downtown tunnel at 919 Milam in 2005. The idea was an instant hit, prompting him to open additional tunnel locations, and now the two suburban locations which serve dinner as well. The Energy Corridor is his first outside Downtown, and Vintage Park is his second. The company, which recently began franchising, also has two franchise-owned locations in Dallas.
Citizens for Animal Protection is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides shelter, adoption, foster care, rescue and other valuable services to animals in need in the Houston area. CAP also provides humane education and community outreach programs to encourage love and respect for all animals. For more information, visit

I love Salata. High quality, real homemade dressings. And now I love them even more.
