Joy Yoga Center celebrates 7th anniversary with a fundraiser for Houston animal
non-profit, SNAP.
Joy Yoga Center, one of Houston’s top yoga studios, is celebrating seven years of cultivating joy through their unique vinyasa yoga classes. To recognize this occasion, Joy Yoga Center will be hosting a 7th anniversary celebration, Saturday April 3, from 7 to 9 p.m., that also serves as a fundraising benefit for Houston charity SNAP (Spay Neuter Assistance Program). With a $15 suggested donation at the door, attendees can celebrate while helping end animal overpopulation in Houston. All proceeds will help SNAP provide more free and low-cost services to those in the community who need it most. The event will feature a Lululemon Athletica fashion show as well as complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres and great tunes from DJ Michael Kessler. The event is a perfect time to celebrate the growth in popularity of Yoga, while benefitting a great cause. Owner Joy Winkler, who has been offering her unique blend of yoga in Houston for more than ten years, approaches this anniversary as she does everything in her life – with a calm sense of excitement for the future. Named one of the best yoga teachers in Houston by Health and Fitness Magazine, Joy has a unique ability of relating with students of all ages, levels and sizes. Through her hands on instruction and personal attention to each student, Joy enables practitioners of every level a unique opportunity to realize the benefits of yoga and grow their own practice at their pace. “Yoga is a metaphor for life,” Joy says. “Everything we teach ourselves on the yoga mat is helping us live happier and healthier lives off the mat.” Rather than focusing on the outward appearance of the postures, Joy encourages students to feel their way through the practice and move in a way that is enjoyable for them – moving not from the head-space, but from a heart-centered space. The result is an invigorating and beneficial practice that teaches the student to enjoy every moment of their life, remaining calm during the challenges and wide-awake during the quiet times.
After five years in an intimate 1200 sq. ft. space located in Houston’s Heights, Joy Yoga relocated to the popular Washington Avenue location in December of 2007. Originally occupying a 2000 square foot space, the center was expanded in January of 2009 adding another 1500 square feet of space, which includes an 1100 sq. ft. studio and two massage therapy suites. Massage therapists, Ansberto Gonzales and Teresa Rembert, as well as acupuncturist Susan Underwood, also joined the Joy Yoga family, providing relaxing and revitalizing massage and further enhancing the positive benefits of the practice for the center’s students. Additionally, the center has been the host of many unique workshops and special events, truly transforming the studio into a center for learning and powerful positive energy.
The practice of yoga has been around for more than 5000 years and offers many unique benefits to those who practice. Reducing stress, building strength and flexibility, increasing mental stimulation and even reducing the signs of aging are just a few of the many benefits yoga can bring into your life. In a time of economic uncertainty, Joy Yoga Center offers clients a lower-cost alternative to pricey health clubs and gym memberships. In addition, classes are scheduled throughout the day making it convenient for executives and stay-at-home moms alike. With no contracts, and pay as you go class options, Joy Yoga will fit within any budget and busy schedule.
“We have seen a tremendous growth in the past several years as people are discovering the benefits of yoga in their lives,” said Winkler. “Each class is filled with practitioners of all levels, moving at their own pace, discovering their own strength and inner peace. There is a real sense of community at our Center as participants share in the excitement of each student’s progression,” she concluded.
With an impressive roster of classes scheduled throughout the day, 7 days a week, as well as unique and powerful workshops and seminars, there is truly something for everyone.
