There are five known types of allergies in dogs, each having both common and unique symptoms. 

Much the same as humans, the symptoms of dog allergies can range from mild to severe, depending on the allergen.

Determining your dog’s allergy can sometimes be a task. Once the allergen is detected, treatment may be as simple as removing the item from your dog’s day to day activities. Dog allergies can be respiratory, as in humans, but are more common on the skin. 

About 40% of dogs suffer from allergies everyday. It is important to treat an allergy no matter how mild it may seem, as it could lead to future health complications.

Types Of Allergies in Dogs:
Contact Allergies - These are the least common allergies found in dogs. Irritation and symptoms may occur immediately, or within 24-48 hours of contact. Some common irritators include bedding such as rubber or wool, chrome or nickel in collars and shampoos. Contact allergies are usually the easiest to treat, as it involves simply removing the item from your dog’s day to day activities. 

Flea Allergies - Flea allergies are very common. The allergy comes from the flea’s saliva entering the dog’s skin from a bite. The most common areas to look for symptoms  is the lower back, right above the tail, and on the paws. A flea bite can be best compared to a human’s reaction to a mosquito bite.

Food Allergies - A dog food allergy can develop as early as five months, and is very often misdiagnosed. Food allergies account for 20% of itching in dogs. Dogs are usually not born with an allergy to food. Common food allergy side effects include itching around the face, paws, ears and mouth. Ear infections are also very common.

Bacterial Allergies - Staph or bacterial allergies are very common, especially in dogs with excess rolls, such as Pugs or Shar Pei’s. Most dogs actually carry a small amount of Staph bacteria on their skin, but only a small percentage are severely affected. Some symptoms include sores on the skin, hair loss, dry, flakey skin and unpleasant odor. 

Inhalant Allergies - This is the number one allergy found in dogs. Also known as Atopy, symptoms are very similar to a human allergy. These include sneezing, coughing, runny nose and watery eyes. Some common causes of an inhalant allergy are dust mites, mildew and pollen in the air. 

If you suspect your dog may have an allergy, it is important to take him to the veterinarian as soon as possible for further diagnosis and treatment.

I also have lived in NYC and Northern Virginia, and I will say this. When I was little I lived IN Manhattan, then we moved out to the Bronx, also a swamp. My aelirgels were insane, puffy eyes, drippy oozy eyes, so bad once I woke up, and I'll never forget this, I couldnt open one eye because of all the crust over night, I had sore throats, clogged ears, stuffed noses and mounds of pressure. Then we moved to Queens, near the water, and I was FINE. Nothing, never a problem, an occasional sneeze attack every now and again, but the other symptoms, gone. Then I moved to Northern Virginia, and almost immediately my body rejected the climate. Stuffy, running nose all the time, sore throat, right near the nasal passage opening, not so much my throat, but it was/is haha sometime uncomfortable to swallow in the early early spring. My ears have gotten it the worst though, because my nose plugs up so easily, the pressure builds up and collects, and just pops my ears all day and night long, it has gotten so bad that it actually hurts. All these things never last long though, 2 or 3 nights or uncomfy sleeping, but then I am fine. Reason why I am posting this : you are not alone!! I see move to the beach.
